Mirjam is a choreographer and dance artist based in Berlin and Basel. In collaboration with her Ensemble she produces her own work in Germany and Switzerland and tours internationally. In 2021 she was awarded the June Johnson Newcomer Prize in the frame of the Swiss Performing Arts Awards. Her artistic practice focuses on improvisation, instant composition and the correlation of sensory perception and physicality. Collaborating across disciplines, she investigates the relationship between the audience and the moving body within different contexts of space, staging her work in the theatre, gallery, outdoors and in the public space.
Her most recent work-series PLAY (2020-2024) premiered at KINDL Museum of Contemporary Art Berlin and Theater ROXY Birsfelden. Since then, PLAY has been shown outdoors at 48-Stunden-Neukölln, on a national tour of Tanzfest Schweiz, at the Performing Arts Festival Berlin and was restaged as a durational performance at Kunsthalle Palazzo Liestal, FASONO Art Space and Dock11 Berlin. In August 2024, she created the site-specific performance OPENING for the inclusive Forward Dance Company of LOFFT Theater Leipzig for the prestigious opening of Kunstfest Weimar, which followed their first collaboration GESTALTEN (2023), a durational performance staged at the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.
Earlier works include the inclusive work ALMOST HOME, which premiered in a hotel at STEPS dance festival in Zurich and Geneva in 2022, and SKINNED, presented at Sophiensaele Berlin, Theater ROXY Birsfelden, 48-Stunden-Neukölln, Novosibirsk Centre for Visual Arts and Chapelle du Quartier Haut in Sète. Her intercultural work FIGURES premiered at Museum der Kulturen Basel during Museumsnacht 2020 with over 3000 visitors. Older works include the duet unknowing (Tanzfaktor 2018), the intercultural work Public Affairs for wildwuchs Festival 2017 at Kaserne Basel and the performance installation DISPLAY (2016) for Candoco Dance Company at the Wellcome Collection London.
Mirjam is a teacher and lecturer for improvisation, instant composition and inclusive dance. She creates work internationally in the context of professional, inclusive and intercultural dance projects (Basel, Bern, London, Jakarta, Lagos, Hamburg etc). 2011-2016 she worked as a choreographer, rehearsal director and dancer for Candoco Dance Company in London. She has danced for Trisha Brown, Jérôme Bel, Thomas Hauert, Rachid Ouramdane, Wendy Houstoun and others.
Mirjam grew up in Basel and studied dance at Theater Basel, Vienna State Opera, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London (Transitions Dance Company, MA Dance Performance). She received the Dance UK Mentorship for Future Leaders in Dance 2016. Mirjam is part of the European female artists programme ATENA (Atelier Temporaire Européen de Navigation Artistique).
